光棍節(jié)通常譯為Singles’ Day或Bachelors’ Day,也可寫(xiě)為Singles Day、Single’s Day、 Bachelors Day、Bachelor’s Day。
Singles’ Day is celebrated on November 11 because the date—11/11—is reminiscent of “bare branches,” the Chinese expression for bachelors and spinsters.
Singles’ Day or Bachelors’ Day, which originated from Nanjing University in 1993, was initially celebrated at various universities in Nanjing during the 1990s.
It got the name “Singles’ Day” because the date consists of four “one”s. Upon graduating, these college students carried the university tradition into society. Singles’ Day has been largely popularized in the internet era and is now observed by youth in several regions outside China as well.
Singles’ Day, a twist on Valentine’s Day, started in China in the 1990s as an obscure (不起眼的) holiday but has snowballed (滾雪球般擴(kuò)大) into a consumer phenomenon thanks largely to Alibaba Group Holding, founded by Jack Ma and which runs China’s largest online marketplace …
In 2009, Alibaba sparked the flame that turned it into what it is today—a massive marketing event selling everything from electronics and clothing to cosmetics and food at big discounts.
It sells through Tmall, AliExpress (阿里巴巴全球速賣通) and Taobao Marketplace platforms, and through merchants’ brick-and-mortar stores (實(shí)體店).
① China’s “Singles Day” Is the World’s Hugest, Craziest Online Shopping Spree (from Buzzfeed)
②China’s Singles Day sets spending record (from Financial Times)

④ Singles’ Day: China splurges $9.3bn in 12 hours on world’s biggest online shopping day (from The Guardian)
翻譯“剁手”“剁手黨”最直截了當(dāng)?shù)淖g文就是hands-chopping、hands-chopping people或a hand chopper,例如:
I’m gonna chop off my hands if I buy again.
On the Singles’ Day, she engaged in crazy online shopping, becoming a hand-chopper as termed by the netizens.
“Hands-chopping people?” Sorry? Did so many people chop their hands in China?
Relax. It’s not a term about felony (刑事重罪) or suicide that is rising in the world’s most populous nation, but a noun describing the spending spree (瘋狂消費(fèi)) of Chinese consumers during the frenzy online shopping promotion.
“Hands-chopping people” are big online spenders who self-mockingly (自嘲地) say that they would like to chop their hands off after buying too much online.
My roommate is a shopaholic/shopping mania.
The January sales can provide shopaholics with far too much temptation.
Last night I couldn’t help buying/doing online shopping again.
In the last hour, there were still consumers from 230 countries maniacally engaged in the shopping spree.
No one on earth can stop my girlfriend from buying online crazily.
①The veteran runner was performing at the best of his career, and everyone else in the race ate his dust.
②We’ve been eating the competitor’s dust since they released their new line of smartphones.
為了避免和eat one’s dust混淆,我們可以將“吃土”譯為eat dirt/soil或live on dirt/soil。
After November 11, I’ll have nothing but soil/dirt to eat.
I spent too much money shopping online. It seems that I will have to live on dirt next month.
The term eating soil also became a trending hashtag on Weibo, a common term in China for being so poor you could only afford dirt for meals.
英語(yǔ)中表達(dá)“不名一文”的詞語(yǔ)有很多,比如penniless、poverty-stricken (一貧如洗)、not have a bean (身無(wú)分文)、stony-broke (身無(wú)分文)、flat broke (身無(wú)分文)、without two pennies to rub together (身無(wú)分文)、not to have a single penny left on (身無(wú)分文)、to be skint (身無(wú)分文)、on one’s uppers (穿著只剩下鞋幫、沒(méi)有鞋底的鞋子,指窮困潦倒)、down and out (貧困潦倒)等等。
If I were unemployed we wouldn’t have a bean to spend.
I wouldn’t take that job even if I were skint.
I have spent all my money on this iPhone 6. Now I am stony-broke.
(Black Friday)
“黑色星期五”是感恩節(jié)(Thanksgiving Day,11月第四個(gè)星期四)后開(kāi)業(yè)的第一天,也是人們圣誕購(gòu)物季的開(kāi)始(the start of the Christmas shopping season)。傳統(tǒng)上,商家用不同顏色的墨水來(lái)記賬,紅色表示虧損即赤字(in the red),黑色表示盈利(in the black),Black Friday由此而來(lái)。對(duì)于商店員工來(lái)說(shuō),這一天忙忙碌碌,也是a black day。
(Cyber Monday)
Cyber Monday Quickly Becoming One of the Biggest Online Shopping Days of the Year。
3. 節(jié)禮日(Boxing Day)
In the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, Boxing Day is primarily known as a shopping holiday … It is a time when shops hold sales often with dramatic price reductions. For many merchants, Boxing Day has become the day of the year with the greatest revenue.
There’s no other shopping bonanza quite like Alibaba’s Singles Day, which has once again smashed records … The tech giant reported $17.8 billion in sales during this year’s frenzy, breaking the record of $14.3 billion set in 2015. That’s more than Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined.
What's More
最后為大家奉上一組和網(wǎng)購(gòu)相關(guān)的詞語(yǔ)的英譯:秒殺(seckilling)、預(yù)售(pre-sale)、紅包(red envelopes)、優(yōu)惠券(coupons)、包郵(free shipping)、七天無(wú)理由退貨(7 days return)、山寨貨(rip-offs/knock-offs/copycats/fakes)、差評(píng)(negative comment/feedback)、有貨(in stock)、斷貨(out of stock)、上架新品(new product display)、品質(zhì)保證(quality guarantee)、(電子)禮品卡(gift/egift cards)、加入購(gòu)物車(add to cart)、下單(place your order)、快遞(express delivery)、快遞員(deliveryman/courier)、送貨方式(shipping method)、限時(shí)搶購(gòu)(flash sale)、海淘(buy products from overseas websites)、沖動(dòng)購(gòu)買(impulse buying)。
