     I flew home shortly afterwards, trying hard to ease my tension on the way home. No sooner had I landed than I rushed to cull a cab home. To clear up the mess of thinking, I rolled down the car window, letting the fresh air in. Memories flashed back with the passing scenes on the streets. Haunted by the closet, I kept on thinking during the car ride home: Was the jacket safe? What about the hankie? Would seeing this empty closet cause me to have a breakdown? When I finally got home, I stumbled to the doorway. Petrified at the thought of seeing hollow closet, I hesitated.

I pulled the door open. To my surprise, the empty closet caused me no panic—just peace. The closet is brightly-lit, casting warm glow. Yes, Dad's stuff was mostly gone but strangely, the memory of him is still fresh. It was then that I realized I didn't need to see the handkerchief or jacket to remember him. The objects were just an outer layer above what remained. Though objects may help us tell a story, they are not stories themselves. Over family dinner, Mom and I shared happiness and heartbreaks, joys and sorrows, laughter and. tears lingering in the house. Sometimes the best, mourning of the past is to embrace the future.

But his mother had looked anxiously along the dike road many times since sunset for her little boy, and now she had closed and locked the cottage door, thinking that Peter was spending the night with his blind friend, and that she would scold him in the morning for staying away from home without permission. Peter tried to whistle, but his teeth chattered with the cold. He thought of his brother and sister in their warm beds, and of his dear father and mother. "I must not let them be drowned, he thought. "I must stay here until someone comes."

The moon and stars looked down on the child crouching on a stone on the side of the dike. His head was bent, and his eyes were closed, but he was not asleep. "I'll stand it somehow, "he thought. So, he stayed there all night keeping the sea out. Early the next morning a man going to work heard a groan as he walked along the top of the dike. Looking over the edge, he saw a child clinging to the side of the great wall. "What's the matter?" he called. "Are you hurt?" "I'm keeping the water back!" Peter yelled. "Tell them to come quickly!" The alarm was spread. People came running with shovels and the hole was soon mended. They carried Peter home to his parents, and before long the whole town knew that he had saved their lives that night.

Dirty pans and pots scattered about, with cockroaches creeping on the cracked floor.

The oldest brother joined us and set the table, which was now laid with lukewarm porridge, creamy milk and yummy bread. All the work done, we sat around and enjoyed the delicious food with mom complimenting it was the most meaningful New Year she had ever had. Meanwhile, tears of gratitude twinkled in the family's eyes as no words could convey with their appreciation towards us.
